August 10 – September 20
This trophy caribou hunt takes place in the picturesque Alaska Range, east of Denali National Park. To hunt this unit requires applying in the Alaska draw, which has a December 15 deadline. There are roughly 150 total permits available and it’s a random draw (no point system!). Those lucky enough to draw this coveted tag will be hunting the largest caribou in the state! This is the barren-ground caribou, the largest sub-species in the world in terms of both antler and body size. The unit is home to a relatively small herd of caribou that doesn’t necessarily migrate like the vast herds to the north. Here, you’ll hunt them from horseback, finding them in small groups to solitary bulls. This Alaska-born outfitter has over 30 years of experience and runs a top-notch, family-run operation. Two camps are strategically located in the unit and consist of cabins and wall tents with experienced horse guides, wranglers, and camp staff. Expect to “spike out” for a few days at a time to get deep into the game-rich country. A wrangler with packhorses will accompany you and your guide to help set up camp and pack your trophy. Rest assured, if you’re lucky enough to draw this tag, the odds of coming home with a Boone and Crocket barren-ground caribou are as good as it gets!
