Founded in 1964, the Bob Marshall Wilderness or, “The Bob”, as it is commonly referred is comprised of just over 1 million acres and is located in northwest Montana. The terrain here is almost all mountainous and will range from 4,000-9,000 feet above sea level. Lower elevations are engulfed in heavy timber, while the high basins contain open meadows with interspersed pockets of timber.

This area of Montana is unique as the rifle elk hunt opens yearly on September 15th. This allows hunters the opportunity to chase bulls, during the peak of the rut, with rifles. Elk in this remote landscape, experience little to no hunting pressure, which results in bulls that are remarkably receptive to calling. Hunters will often find themselves riding horseback across the high alpine basins, intermittently calling waiting for a bull to respond. Once a bugle is heard you can expect to dismount and close the distance.

The use of horses/mules is almost essential to efficiently access/hunt this vast country. Our outfitter has a stable of surefooted stock that work 10 months out of the year. This ensures clients are riding well-mannered animals which only adds to the enjoyment of the overall experience.

These traditional wilderness style camps, consist of wall tents equipped with wood burning stoves and cots. Evenings in camp are spent trading stories around a fire or enjoying a great meal in a large dining tent. For those who seek the ultimate mountain adventure, you can also elect to make multi-day spike camp trips into the deepest portions of The Bob. On these excursions you will either sleep under the stars or employ small pup-tents.
