Experience a true wilderness elk hunt from the comforts of an established drop camp. This high country hunt is eight days in length (one day to pack in, six hunting days, and one day pack out). Typical success rates on these wilderness drop camps with a rifle and muzzleloader run anywhere from 50% – 75% on bulls. The archery hunt groups can usually expect to see elk daily with a high probability of shot opportunity. Factors that affect success on these hunts are weather, physical conditioning and mental attitude.
Services for this hunt include a fully supplied camp, directions to the appropriate trailhead, riding horse on the pack days and packing of personal gear, weapons and game. A packing list for the recommended personal gear will be supplied. Once game is harvested and broken down you will need to call via sat phone for retrieval (contact www.rangeglobal.net for information on sat phone rentals). A conference call orientation will be conducted with each drop camp group to go over Colorado regulations, hunting tips and game retrieval requirements the summer prior to your scheduled hunt. Drop camps can accommodate groups of up to four hunters.
Camps include a 12×18 wall tent, small storage tent, wood stove, Coleman cook stove, propane heater, table, four stools, sleeping pads, cots, pots, pans, utensils, cups, dish soap, dish rags/towels, 5 gallon water containers, water filter, lantern and mantels, axe, shovel, saw, hammer, fuel, game bags, two topo maps, first aid kit, fire extinguisher and trash bags. Hunters are responsible for keeping firewood and water stocked. Hunters are responsible for supplying paper goods (Ziploc bags, paper towels, paper plates, toilet paper, etc.). Refrigerated food should be packed and split evenly by weight in two 48 quart coolers (not the Yeti type as they will not fit in the horse panniers) with a block of ice in each cooler. Dry goods, dry milk, paper goods and canned goods should be brought to the trailhead in grocery bags or boxes so they can be re-packed in containers for transport to camp. Excessive amounts of alcohol, soft drinks and other liquids are too heavy and fragile and will not be packed in.
