September 2-6
As both the outfitter and 5th generation ranch owner this family run outfitting operation takes great pride in the stewardship of their ranch and wildlife herds that call this area home. This ranch is found entirely within the boundaries of Colorado’s famed Unit 21 which is well known for producing trophy mule deer bucks. The ranch totals 16,000 private acres, which is surrounded by thousands of acres BLM land, which the outfitter is permitted to hunt. The hunting area will vary from 6,500 ft. to 9,000 ft. with landscapes dominated by aspens, tall pines, open sagebrush parks and grassy meadows. A well-developed road system is present, but hiking will be necessary.
As the snow melts each spring bucks will travel from their winter range back to this high country habitat to seek out cooler temperatures and the tender browse that emerges. The outfitter will watch these bucks grow throughout the summer and typically have a couple of “shooter” bucks found prior to season opening. Pressure on the neighboring public lands will also push deer onto the ranch. These archery hunts take place in early September, at this time the bucks are still on their summer patterns and much more docile than later into the year. The primary hunting method used will be spot and stalk with the occasional ground blind setup over known feeding areas. Historical shot opportunity has run 90%+ on archery hunts. Shot ranges will vary but 30-50 yards is quite normal. Hunters can expect to target bucks in the 170-190 range, bucks that well exceed 200 have been taken on the ranch.
Upon concluding the days hunt you will return to the lodge to exchange stories and enjoy hearty home cooked meals. Hunters will either stay in the lodge or rustic log cabins located next to the lodge.
Colorado’s draw system is a true preference point system. This means whomever applies with the most points is awarded said tag. As of 2020, non-resident will need 4 or more points to ensure a successful archery mule deer draw in unit 21.
