The Gila National Forest of western New Mexico has long been noted for producing quality bull elk. Our outfitter has been offering professionally-guided hunts in this area for over 30 years, using his family’s historic homestead as a base of operation. It is because of his deep roots in the area and sterling reputation that he is able to offer our clients guaranteed access to some of the best elk hunting in New Mexico at the best pricing available. Another way to say it is, you are ensured to get a normally difficult-to-draw tag at the best pricing around, because the outfitter has them secured through his landowner connections. Accommodations consist of a historic lodge, comfortable ranch house, or wall tent set-up depending on the circumstances. Delicious home-cooked breakfast and dinner and a sack lunch in the field is typical.
Colorado Private Ranch Archery Elk (Over the Counter Tag)
Dates: Archery – September 2–6 (1 Spot) or September 21–25 (2 Spots)
As both the outfitter and 5th generation ranch owner, this family-run outfitting operation takes great pride in the stewardship of their ranch and wildlife herds that call this area home. The ranch totals 16,000 private acres, surrounded by thousands of acres of BLM land, which the outfitter is permitted to hunt. Resident elk numbers throughout the summer and early fall typically exceed 500 total animals of which the vast majority are cows. As September approaches, bulls will trek from miles around to pursue these resident cows which creates fierce rutting behavior. Hunters can expect to use a combination of spot-and-stalk, calling, and sitting on productive wallows/water holes throughout the hunt. Upon concluding the day’s hunt you will return to the lodge to exchange stories and enjoy hearty home-cooked meals. Hunters will stay in the lodge or rustic log cabins located next to the lodge.
