Teddy Roosevelt is noted to have proclaimed – The reason behind the creation of the Grand Canyon National Game Preserve was to protect “the finest deer herd in America” –Theodore Roosevelt, November 1906.

It’s no common secret that in order to harvest a big deer you have to hunt where big deer live. This concept is a solid concept, but when you are tackling a unit the size of the Kaibab this can become a very daunting task. It’s always amazing to me how often you can find a mature deer in the same general area year after year. It seems that something “Clicks” with mature bucks when they find a safe secure area to call home.

There are different options when it comes to what type of tag you are wanting to draw. The first one is the archery tag which usually starts in the middle of August when the deer are still in full velvet and are on their summer feeding patterns. These hunts are conducted by sitting on water holes or spot and stalk after your buck is located. There are 2 different rifle seasons. The early rifle season can be very productive with lots of time behind the glass looking over bucks until you find the right one. This hunt will take place towards the end of October. The late season would be the rifle season which usually starts around the middle of November. This hunt can be one of the best mule deer hunts in the west when it comes to hunting trophy mule deer. These bucks come out of the woodworks looking for hot does. All of these hunts are exciting and they all take a different amount of points to draw.

We have been working with one of the best outfitters in the state to host these 7 and 10-day archery and rifle mule deer hunts. They know all of these small remote areas that tend to hold big deer year after year.  The hunts consist of spot-and-stalk style hunting, with hours and hours behind optics, and are an excellent opportunity for an above-average mule deer. Your hunt will include wall tent-style camp accommodations, hot meals, and expert guide service. These guys have been hunting this unit for many years and have harvested some of the largest bucks to come off this unit year in and year out. While everyone is not going to come home with a giant, you are truly getting an opportunity to put yourself in a position for the buck of a lifetime.
