Late October or Early December
The Eastern Plains of Colorado have long been one of the West’s premier locations for those in search of trophy mule deer. Preference points are the name of the game in Colorado and this particular hunt, located in GMU 137, only takes 1 or 2 points for the late October hunt and roughly 15-20 points for the hunt taking place in early December. This camp is set in some of the most desolate but beautiful country a hunter can imagine – the perfect backdrop for a trophy mule deer hunt under a big Western’ sky. The accommodations on this adventure are an old rock house that is warm and dry but has no electricity or running water. You’ll feel as though you have stepped back in time and the stress of day-to-day life will melt away. Blue sky gives way to the most incredible nighttime sky a hunter can imagine, and while the fire burns low you cannot help but be overtaken with this starlit show. As you wake to a light breakfast the anticipation will build, and as the grey dawn gives way to morning, you will be covering ground in search of these amazing deer. Spot-and-stalk is the most productive style of hunting in this big open country, and once you and your expert guide locate the right buck, the true test begins. Stalks can take minutes to sometimes several hours with the goal being a trophy buck in your sites as the hunt commences. This is a hunt for mature mule deer in the 170-180 class with a few bucks that have exceeded the 200 inch mark over the years.
