I’ve mentioned Utah before and I’m sure I will again because it’s such a hunter’s paradise with tags for 8 big game species available through their draw. Each year Utah produces some of the most impressive bull elk and mule deer trophies in the country, and that doesn’t even start the conversation about Rocky Mountain and desert bighorn sheep, Shiras moose, Rocky Mountain goats, bison, and pronghorn antelope. That’s why Utah is often on my mind. And with the application deadline rapidly approaching on April 27, it’s moved to the top of my mind.
How the Draw Works
Utah issues tags through a modified bonus points system. 50% of tags are awarded to those who apply with the most points, and the other 50% are allocated in a random draw to all other applicants. In the random draw, your name is entered in the hat one time for each point you have, ensuring an increasing probability of drawing as you build points over time.
However, general deer tags are allocated on a true preference point system, meaning those with the most points will be awarded the tag.
Elk
Utah has a noteworthy record of producing trophy bull elk and 2023 should be no different. Utah is currently experiencing great snowfall that will likely result in maximum horn growth this fall. For 2023, the state has completed a small overhaul to their elk season structure and tag allotments. Based on studies, these changes are not projected to have a large impact on overall bull quality but it will result in a large number of new hunts that can be applied for. Archers will find that seasons now run to September 19, allowing them to pursue bulls during the rut, which previously wasn’t always the case.
If you want to hunt big bulls, you should be applying in Utah. The wait to build bonus points will be worth it.
Mule Deer
Over the last decade Utah experienced a regression in average trophy size of deer, even from the premier hunting units, and a decline in terms of total herd numbers. In reaction, the state has taken an aggressive stance on predator management and reduced the number of available tags. The strategy seems to be working in areas being closely monitored. As sportsmen and women, we should applaud Utah’s efforts to regain their storied mule deer herds.
Mule deer tags are available for archery, muzzleloader, and rifle, and applicants can apply for both limited-entry and general deer tags. The general units can produce trophy bucks, but these are typically few and far between. Select outfitters consistently produce big deer, but the bulk of general hunts can be classified as great trips that produce representative bucks. If you are trophy minded, you should apply for the limited-entry deer tags. These hunts take place in the state’s famed units that rival the finest deer areas in the West. To improve your odds, consider applying for the archery or muzzleloader tags in these areas.
Rocky Mountain Bighorn, Desert Bighorn, Shiras Moose, Rocky Mountain Goat, Bison
Utah offers an extremely limited number of tags for each of these species. That’s the bad news. The good news is this limited availability ensures nearly 100% success on mature animals, which is the state’s goal. Utah is one of only five states offering true free-range, B&C-eligible trophies for all these species. Trophy quality will vary vastly from unit to unit, so be sure to discuss your expectations with your TAGS consultant to ensure you are being applied in the unit that best aligns with your goals. Pronghorn Antelope
Antelope can be found throughout Utah, but tag availability is quite low. If you’re sitting on points, I’d suggest continuing to apply and build points. If you do not have Utah antelope points, it would be wise to speak with a TAGS consultant prior to jumping in. Opportunities in other states might be a better fit, possibly without the wait you’re likely to encounter in Utah.
