May 15 marks the deadline to apply for Maine’s Canadian Moose tags. When we look at moose hunting on the east coast, the great state of Maine is definitely the standout. While other states on the right coast are cutting permits due to their declining moose populations, Maine is increasing cow tags to keep its herd healthy and balanced. In fact, with a moose population estimated at 65,000 animals, Maine holds more moose than any other state in the lower 48, making it a must-apply state.
Drawing a bull moose permit in Maine is not an easy task. Last year, 24,249 non-residents applied for an allocation of 308 tags. That results in draw odds of 1 in 79. However, these are simplified draw odds, because in Maine, applicants can purchase an unlimited number of “chances” to attempt to improve their odds of drawing a moose tag. The more chances you purchase, the better your odds of drawing.
Here at WTA TAGS, we offer Maine’s 10 packs when applying for moose. If you would like to purchase 10 chances, the state fee is $55. Purchase 20 chances for $110, 30 chances for $165, etc. Also, bonus points factor in to further improve your odds. In your first 5 years of applying, you will receive one bonus point per year. In years 6–10, you will receive two points per year. For years 11–15, you will receive three points per year. And for years 16+, you will receive 10 points per year.
