The deadline to apply for a whitetail tag or preference point in Iowa is June 2. Preference points are critical to drawing a tag in Iowa. The tags are allocated to the applicants with the most points for a particular zone and weapon. Typically, it will require 4 to 5 points to draw a rut/November archery tag in most zones, and 1 to 2 points to draw a gun tag (first shotgun, second shotgun, or muzzleloader). Preference points in Iowa never expire. Most importantly, if you’re sitting on the required points to draw an archery tag, don’t wait! Cash them in this year so you can hunt Iowa as much as possible in your lifetime, as Iowa truly is THE LAND OF GIANTS!
