Between 1969-1977 a total of 95 oryx were released on White Sands Missile Range and the surrounding areas of southern, New Mexico. This area is primarily made up of flat desert, rolling hills and intermittent canyons and is covered with tall sage and mesquite. This relocation was all in the interest of providing additional hunting opportunities within New Mexico. Oryx, not only provide excellent hunting, they also make for truly great table fare. Today, Oryx around White Sands number into the thousands.

New Mexico now offers the opportunity to hunt this herd through an open lottery draw. This is a classic safari style spot-and-stalk or tracking style hunt, for the African Gemsbok AKA Oryx, which any applicant, getting lucky in the draw, can participate in without leaving the United States!

Hunts for these majestic animals take place virtually year round which allows for a great opportunity in the off-season! The hunts that take place on WSMR offer 3 day season while the off-range hunts come with month long seasons. Overall Oryx numbers are lower off WSMR but the off-range hunts do offer much better draw odds as well as historically speaking, 100% shot opportunity for clients that choose to hunt with one of WTA’s veteran off-range hunt operators.

Although a guide is not required for this hunt we have found that the overall success rate on trophy caliber animals is much higher when the lucky tag holders are assisted by an approved outfitter.

Additional Info

Guide-only hunt. Your guide will pick you up at your hotel each morning and drop you off after each days hunts. Meals and lodging are not included other than a sack lunch during the day.

All-inclusive, and does include meals and lodging, along with the fully guided hunt.
