November – December
This boat based mountain goat hunt takes place with a family-run outfit on Baranof Island in southeast Alaska. Mountain Goats were introduced onto Baranof Island in the mid-1900’s. They were well-suited to the terrain and the population expanded. Today, the island has an estimated goat population of about 1,200 animals. This hunt takes place in November and early December, which is the rutting period for for goats as well as Sitka Deer. Their rutting behavior, along with snow at higher elevations, tends to bring the goats lower on the mountain. However, hunters should still be prepared for a physically demanding hunt. Mountain goats are typically glassed and spotted from the shore and valley floors before a climb and stalk is made. Goats typically have their long winter capes this time of year which makes for a great trophy. This is one of the least physically demanding goat hunt you will find. If you can walk up an incline, you can participate in this hunt. Many of the hunters here have been in their 60’s and 70’s. It goes without saying, of course, the better your physical conditioning is the better your odds of success will be. Sitka Deer can be taken on this hunt at no extra cost.
