Archery: September
Muzzleloader: Mid-September
Rifle: October and November
The southern portion of Colorado is home to some of the best elk hunting in the state. This limited draw hunt can typically be drawn with 1-2 preference points.
On these hunts one can expect to encounter rugged and steep mountain terrain which will vary between 8,000–12,000 feet in elevation. It’s high altitude hunting at its finest so physical fitness and off-season training is imperative to successfully hunting this rugged unit. Historically, these hunts have seen about a 70% opportunity on legal bulls.
During the September archery and muzzleloader hunts one can expect to use a combination of spot-and-stalk, calling, and ambush-style hunting techniques. Bulls can be susceptible to calling into the first rifle hunt but glassing and sitting over known feeding areas will be the primary hunting methods utilized during the rifle seasons.
