September – Archery/Muzzeloader
Unit 49 is located in the heart of Colorado’s Rocky Mountains and offers a true hunting experience in remote country, from camp trailers. It’s a limited-entry area, meaning there are no over-the-counter seasons. This ensures the unit is managed not only for bigger bulls but also for better overall hunter experiences. The rugged area varies from 7,900 to 13,000 feet above sea level. At lower elevations, rolling hills are covered with sagebrush, grass, pinyon pines, and juniper trees. As you climb, the rolling ridges and creek drainages are covered in conifer and aspen forest. Above the tree line, you will find vast expanses of high mountain tundra.
Due to the camp’s remote location, you will experience much lower hunter pressure and have easy access to the known “honey holes” within the area. Archery and muzzleloader hunts take place in the month of September. A combination of hunting methods, including calling, spot & stalk, and sitting over wallows, will be utilized. The 1st and 2nd rifle seasons will involve large amounts of glassing. Once a suitable bull is spotted, a stalk will be planned and executed. Bulls in the 280–320 range will be the norm, with potential for some better bulls every season.
A combination of home-cooked meals and freeze-dried food will be utilized. The camp trailers will be equipped with generator power; cell phone service is marginal and should not be expected.
