Archery- September
Muzzleloader- September
Rifle- October and November
Unit 501 is nestled in the heart of Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, offering a truly authentic hunting experience in rugged, remote terrain. Accessible only by horseback or on foot, the adventure begins at a secluded wall-tent camp. As a limited-entry area, Unit 501 does not offer over-the-counter seasons, ensuring better game management and enhanced hunter experiences, with the opportunity for bigger bulls. The area spans elevations from 7,000 to over 12,000 feet. At lower altitudes, you’ll find aspen, fir, and pine forests, while higher up, vast expanses of high-mountain tundra await above the tree line.
Your hunt will be based out of a remote wall-tent camp deep within the national forest and designated wilderness area. Horses will provide transportation into the camp and will be used as needed during the hunt. Thanks to the camp’s remote location, you’ll encounter minimal hunting pressure and have easy access to prime hunting spots, known as “honey holes.” September is reserved for archery and muzzleloader hunts, where various techniques like calling, spot-and-stalk, and sitting over wallows will be employed. During the 1st and 2nd rifle seasons, glassing will be the primary method for locating bulls, followed by a planned stalk. Bulls in the 280–320 range are typical, and horses will be used to pack out meat and trophies.
Accommodations are in double-occupancy wall tents, equipped with cots and wood-burning stoves for comfort. Meals will be a mix of home-cooked food and freeze-dried options. The camp operates without generator power, and cell phone service is minimal, so it’s best not to expect connectivity.
Tags for this hunt must be obtained through Colorado’s annual big-game draw, and preference points are required. As of 2024, drawing an archery tag requires 7+ points, muzzleloader tags need 14+, 1st rifle hunts require 8+, and 2nd rifle hunts need 4+ points.
