This hunt is located just outside Yellowstone National Park in some of the most rugged country in Wyoming. Expect high elevations, deep canyons, and a true wilderness hunt. You’ll ride horseback for about 5 hours into camp, get settled, and begin hunting the following morning. Horses are used to cover ground, and much of the hunt is spent glassing before making a planned stalk with your guide.
This area is known for producing quality bulls, with many in the 320–340 class and some exceeding 350 each year. Archery season takes place in September during the rut, while rifle season opens October 1st. You’ll be hunting resident elk early, with additional bulls moving out of Yellowstone as the weather cools. This combination creates excellent opportunity throughout the season.
This is a physically demanding hunt, but it offers a true chance at a trophy bull in a wild setting. Expect to need around 15 points for the rifle tag and about 8 for archery. While building points, you can also apply in the random draw, where Wyoming allocates 25% of non-resident tags. If a top-end elk hunt is your goal, this one deserves serious consideration.
