The Valles Caldera (Unit 6B) is one of New Mexico’s top trophy elk areas, routinely producing bulls scoring between 310-350+ inches. Elk populations number 2,500-3,000 and tags are extremely limited. This limited hunting pressure ensures bulls are not shy to the call during the rut making the archery hunt extremely sought-after. Muzzleloader and rifle tags will also provide an incredible experience.
This 90,000 acre area was formed 1.2 million years ago through a volcanic eruption that create the 13 mile wide circular crater. Today the Caldera is comprised of beautiful high mountain meadows as well as aspen, spruce and fir trees. Elevations encountered on these hunts will vary from 8,500-10,000 feet above sea level. Hikes can be long as the road system is minimal but with gradual elevation changes, they tend to be enjoyable, allowing you to take in the beauty and wildlife within the area.
