Golden Dorado – Uruguay River

The Uruguay River below the Salto Grande Dam has been producing the biggest golden dorado for many years now. Low fishing pressure plus the amazing amount of forage below the dam has enabled the dorado to grow to enormous sizes. The fishing is strictly regulated and only four boats are permitted to fish below the dam (two from Argentina and two from Uruguay) for just four days a week, six hours per day. Our outfitter holds the exclusive fishing rights to the Uruguayan side. The freshwater dorado is the top predator in South America’s rivers. Part of the salmon family, it combines the ferocious strike of a peacock bass with the acrobatic skills of a tarpon. This unique and sometimes unbeatable fish has only recently claimed the recognition it deserves in the angling world. There is no other place in the world that offers the quality and quantity of dorado fishing like the Uruguay River. These are large fish and there are lots of them! Fishing is now only allowed with flies and artificial lures, with single barbless hooks only. Over 20 IGFA world records have been broken here including the All-Tackle record twice. You’ll fish from center-console boats with 60-hp four-stroke outboards, operated by a knowledgeable guide who knows the river intimately.
