March
This is not a traditional hunt, but rather a conservation-based expedition led by Mexico’s leading jaguar research team, in partnership with one of the Western U.S.’s most respected houndsmen. Designed for adventurers with a passion for impact, this immersive field experience plays a vital role in protecting one of North America’s most elusive predators.
The mission: to safely tranquilize a wild jaguar, collect critical biological data—including sex, weight, estimated age, and blood and hair samples—and fit the animal with a GPS tracking collar. This data helps researchers monitor population health and map vital wildlife corridors, directly contributing to the species’ long-term survival.
Your involvement also supports a community-based compensation program that offsets livestock losses for local ranchers, fostering tolerance and reducing retaliatory killings—a proven strategy for building coexistence between people and predators.
Tracking a jaguar in the wild is a rare privilege. Using a network of cellular and traditional trail cameras, the research team scans the jungle for activity, checking baits and driving roads looking for fresh tracks each morning. Once a jaguar is located, expert hounds are deployed to safely pursue the animal into the brush for tranquilization. You’ll be part of the action—helping collect data, collar the jaguar, and witness the release back into its natural habitat. Photography and video documentation are not only welcomed but encouraged and are asked to be shared with The Guardian.
You’ll stay at the peaceful Casa Botanica Guest House in the fishing village of Lo de Marcos, just steps from local restaurants and pristine beaches. While not in the field, you can enjoy:
Lunches are served daily at the base camp. Breakfast and dinner are at your leisure in town, giving you the chance to enjoy authentic local cuisine.
