The Koryak Snow Sheep (Ovis nivicola koriakorum) is a dwarf form of the Kamchatka Snow Sheep, found further north in the Koryak Mountains of mainland Siberia, above the Kamchatka Peninsula. It is very similar in coloration to the Kamchatka Snow Sheep but about 30% smaller, with less pronounced white muzzle and rump patches. This compact sheep has shorter legs in proportion to its body compared to its southern counterpart. Individuals found at the northern extremity of the Koryak Range exhibit traits of the Chukotka Snow Sheep, which has a heavier, lighter coat made of soft and woolly hair.
The hunting area is located in the Koryak Mountains, north of 60º N and east of the Penzhina River, south of 64º N. To reach the hunting area, travel is similar to the Kamchatka Snow Sheep route. After reaching Petropavlovsk-Kamchatski, you will take a commercial flight to Tilichiki in the northern part of the Kamchatka Peninsula, followed by a helicopter flight to the hunting area.
The hunting season for the Koryak Snow Sheep runs from August 1 to September 30, with the best time to hunt being in August. Snow sheep hunting can also be combined with Kamchatka Bear hunting starting from August 25.
The climate in August typically sees daytime temperatures between 41 to 68°F (5 to 20°C), with nighttime temperatures ranging from 32 to 50°F (0 to 10°C). Later in the season, rainy, snowy, and windy weather is possible. Accommodation consists of modern windproof tents, including separate large tents for dining and showers. Base camps are located in mountain valleys at elevations of 2,500 to 3,000 feet (800–1,000 meters), with electricity supplied by generator sets. Fly camps with small tents are used during the hunt. Each camp has a cook who prepares home-style meals for the hunters.
The hunt follows the typical spot-and-stalk method, with each hunter generally accompanied by one guide and one assistant. Expect backpacking and hard walking on foot. Fly camps are set up with the specific goal of hunting a particular animal or area.
