Hunting mule deer is one of the West’s most rewarding big-game experiences. Unfortunately, rising demand and declining deer herds have driven prices up dramatically. For hunters looking for a first-rate Western hunt without paying top-tier trophy prices, a management buck hunt is the smart alternative.
You’ll hunt vast private ranches that hold strong deer numbers, delivering plenty of action and a true Western experience. Target bucks are mature animals that fall outside ideal antler configurations—excellent deer that have lived full lives and offer a challenging, ethical hunt.
Each day, you’ll cover country by pickup or side-by-side, traveling across expansive private ranches and adjoining public lands. The hunt is active and strategic: glassing from high points, evaluating bucks for age and antler criteria, then planning and executing a careful stalk. Typical shot distances range from 200–400 yards, making this an ideal hunt for confident riflemen who enjoy real-world hunting conditions.
A cow elk may be added to this hunt, elevating the experience even further. Not only does this provide additional opportunity in the field, but it also puts some of the best table fare in the West in your freezer.
After each day’s hunt, you’ll return to a comfortable, spacious lodge with double-occupancy bedrooms and shared bathrooms. A full-time cook prepares hearty, home-style meals, and the lodge offers a clean, relaxed setting to unwind, swap stories, and get ready for the next day.
This hunt requires a Montana General Deer Tag (deer hunt only) or a Big Game Combo (deer/cow elk combo).
