Rifle – Late October / Early November

Archery – Late August/Mid September or Mid/Late December

While mule deer hunting in Arizona’s – Unit 17A – has always been good it’s also definitely is on the rise. The rifle tags on this unit have always been limited entry draw, however, the archery tags were always over-the-counter and unlimited. Then, in 2022, all of 17A went limited entry draw for its mule deer tags – archery included. Naturally, when you limit the tags on a unit, the harvest goes down and the age class goes up. When age class improves, so does deer quality.

WTA TAGS works with the best outfitter in unit 17A. He and his team grew up hunting this heavily rolling country and have taken some of the largest mule deer bucks on the unit. Patience and a lot of glassing are the name of the game in this low deer density area. This is a solid 160/170 B&C mule deer hunt, with 180/190 B&C deer possible. This outfitter has guided several clients to mule deer scoring over 200″ off this unit. A comfortable lodge, good food and a relaxing campfire await after your day behind the glass.

Rather than waiting to draw a mule deer tag on the Arizona Strip or a late tag on the Kaibab, (tags you may never draw in your lifetime), you may consider applying in 17A. With five bonus points, draw odds are often better than 30% on the rifle tag. Archery tags are even easier to draw. Rifle hunts take place in late October/early November and archery hunts can be conducted in either August or December. This is a hunt worth applying for!
