The Gila National Forest of western New Mexico is arguably one of the top producing areas for trophy bull elk with units 16A and 16D being the states premier units. Unit 16A
Elevation: 5,000-9,938 feet
General information: Arguably one of the best elk units in New Mexico. This unit is well known for its large elk herds, trophy quality and relatively huntable terrain. Much of the unit consists of big open meadows with tracts of ponderosa pine.
Trophy Expectations: 320-350+
Seasons: Archery 1 (Sept 1-14), Archery 2- (Sept 15-24), Rifle 1- (Oct 15-19), Rifle 2- (Oct 22-26)
Lodging: Lodge, Cabin, Wall tent, Travel trailers
Unit 16D
Elevation: 5,800-9,800 feet
General information: The Gila’s premier elk hunting unit, known for having large elk herds and relatively mild terrain. It consists of steep arroyos and rugged canyons that cut through the land in every direction with grassy meadows and flats with ponderosa pines. Although portions of the unit are rough, a road network does exist for those that seek a physically easier experience.
Trophy Expectations: 320-350+

Easy: Somewhat easy walking when it comes to physicality. Minimal walking or hiking and terrain is very accessible. Mostly hunting from blinds or tree stands.
Moderate: Physicality is somewhat moderate to advanced. Spot and stalk method of hunting as well as some hunting from blinds. Terrain can vary from prairies to mountains at higher elevations.
Difficult: Requires an advanced degree of physical endurance. Terrain is typically more mountainous and hunting can take place at higher elevation.
Extreme: Most difficult and physically demanding hunts. Requires advanced to extreme endurance and terrain or game pursued may involve dangerous situations.
