New Mexico’s unit 36 is one of the most sought-after elk areas in the state. Here you will find a thriving elk herd and great trophy quality, 280-320 bulls are the norm with 350+ bulls coming out of the unit each year. Hunts within unit 36 will take place between 6,000-11,000 feet in elevation. Lower elevations are desert like, containing pinon and juniper as well as oak brush. At higher elevations you will find picturesque mountain views with open parks and large stands of fir and pines.
Archery hunts take place in one of two seasons with the 1st being September 1-14 and the second being September 15-24. Hunting techniques will vary from spot and stalk, sitting over water, and calling, this will be dependent on what stage the rut is at during your hunt. Muzzleloader and rifle hunts will almost exclusively be utilizing spot and stalk methods. Scopes are not allowed on muzzleloaders in New Mexico. Regardless of weapon or season choice all hunters should be prepared for a physically demanding hunt with daily hikes coving four or more miles across rugged terrain. Once an elk is harvested your guide will be able to call in a packer that will come with horses to assist in removing the animal in a timely manner.
Lodging will consist of a modern six bedroom facility equipped with three full bathrooms. A cook/caretaker will be present to ensure quality meals are served and the lodge is clean and cared for. Â Rooms will consist of single and double occupancy. Groups should expect to be in shared rooms. All efforts will be made for single hunters to be accommodated in private rooms, but this is dependent on bookings.
A tag for this hunt can come in one of two ways, the first being through New Mexico’s annual big-game draw or by purchasing a landowner voucher.
