Unit 49 is situated in North Central New Mexico. Within the unit you will find rugged terrain that requires one to be physically and mentally prepared for a challenge. Steep, forrested mountains with parks dominate the landscape. A number of burn scars are scattered throughout the unit as well.
Hunting methods will vary based on your weapon of choice. Archers can expect to use a combination of spot and stalk, ambush, and calling to get on bulls. The first rifle season typically takes place in early October, coinciding with the tail end of the rut. During this time, spot and stalk will be the primary method. The second rifle season occurs after the rut, and hunters can expect to spend time behind optics, scanning the vast terrain, then planning a stalk to get within shooting range. Rifle hunters should be proficient out to 400 yards. Bulls in the 280-320 class will be targeted across all seasons.
Accommodations will consist of a nice bed & breakfast situated in the area. Comfortable rooms and home cooked meals are to be expected.
A tag for this hunt can be obtained in one of two ways: through New Mexico’s annual big-game draw or by purchasing a landowner voucher.
