New Mexico’s Unit 51A & 51B is renowned for its exceptional public land elk hunting, offering high success rates on quality bulls in the 270-310 inch range. This area features elevations ranging from 6,500 to 8,500+ feet, with hunters traversing rolling mountains and mesas. Vegetation varies by elevation, with lower areas dominated by piñon and juniper trees, which transition into expansive fir forests and lush meadows at higher elevations.
Your hunting approach will depend on the weapon you choose. Archers can expect a mix of spot-and-stalk, ambush, and calling techniques to get close to bulls. The first rifle season, typically in early October, coincides with the tail end of the rut. During this time, spot-and-stalk hunting will be the primary method. The second rifle season, occurring after the rut, is ideal for hunters who prefer using optics to scan the vast terrain, then planning a stalk to close the distance for a shot. Rifle hunters should be prepared to engage targets up to 400 yards. Physical preparation is critical—expect a challenging and rewarding hunt.
After a long day on the hunt, you’ll return to modern cabins in the town of Tres Piedras. Each cabin is equipped with a bathroom, ensuring a hot shower at the end of your day. Meals will consist of both pre-prepared food and fresh, home-cooked meals.
You can obtain a tag for this hunt in one of two ways: through New Mexico’s annual big-game draw or by purchasing a landowner voucher.
