New Mexico’s Unit 52, located in North Central New Mexico along the Colorado border, is renowned for its thriving elk population, making it a prime destination for action-packed hunts. The area’s diverse terrain and impressive elevations ranging from 8,000 to nearly 11,000 feet create an ideal environment for elk. Rolling sage-covered hills soon transition into the stunning Rocky Mountain landscape, providing breathtaking views and diverse flora.

Your hunting strategy will depend on your chosen weapon. Archers can expect a blend of spot-and-stalk, ambush, and calling techniques to get close to bulls. Muzzleloader hunts take place in early October and typically catches the tail end of the rut. The first rifle season, typically in mid October, making spot-and-stalk hunting the primary method. The second rifle season, after the rut, is perfect for hunters who prefer using optics to scan the vast terrain and then planning a stalk to close the distance for a shot. Rifle hunters should be proficient in shooting out to 400 yards. Physical preparation is crucial—this is a demanding hunt, but the rewards are well worth the effort. Bulls in the 260-310 inch range will be common across all seasons.

After a long day on the hunt, you’ll retreat to two modern cabins, each equipped with a bathroom for a hot shower and a relaxing end to your day. Meals will consist of both pre-prepared food and fresh, home-cooked meals, ensuring you’re fueled for the next day’s adventure.

You can obtain a tag for this hunt in one of two ways: through New Mexico’s annual big-game draw or by purchasing a landowner voucher. This trip includes a landowner voucher.
