When pursuing these elusive “grey ghosts” with rifles, the primary tactic for a successful harvest is glassing. Expect to spend many hours atop vantage points scanning for the right buck. Coues deer, like all whitetails, have a home range, making pre-scouting essential. During late December and early January, the rut kicks into full effect. Unlike most whitetails, you can witness bucks cruising the hills, engaging in fights, and tending does, a spectacle challenging to observe in timbered environments. Archers can also employ spot-and-stalk techniques, although this method poses considerable difficulty for success. Opting for sitting in stands or blinds proves to be the most productive way to harvest a buck with a bow. Rifle hunters should anticipate shots ranging from 300 yards and beyond, while archers should be proficient up to 70 yards if spot-and-stalk is their chosen method.
Archery tags are readily available over the counter in the majority of Arizona’s Coues deer units. However, rifle hunters must participate in Arizona’s yearly big-game application period for a chance to draw tags. Tags may require as few as zero points for some units, while others demand 15 points or more for a guaranteed draw. The late December hunt in each area typically ranks as the most sought-after. TAGS Consultants stand ready to guide you in selecting and applying for the right area that meets or exceeds your expectations.
Accommodations range from wall-tent style camps to cabins and hotels. For those who prefer to manage their own camp, we offer “guide only” packages that exclude meals and lodging.
