As soon as we pass July 4th, my mind and heart shift from family baseball games to hunting season anticipation. We begin hanging tree stands, setting up ground blinds, and firing up trail cameras to see how things have progressed over the summer. These local hunts tide us over until waterfowl start moving into our area. I have two sons who are absolutely crazy about hunting. While they enjoy bowhunting for big game, their favorite time is when the ducks and geese arrive—I’d call them waterfowl nuts! They’ve been fortunate to hunt in Saskatchewan and out of state a few times, experiencing great shoots and meeting cool people. But I’ve held off on three particular destinations, knowing they will be waterfowl hunting adventures in a league of their own.
I’m saving these three for the right moment, knowing the boys will appreciate them even more when we finally go.
Alberta, Canada
The prairie land of central and southern Alberta is a magical destination for waterfowl hunters. It offers a true mixed-bag hunt of big Canada geese, mallards, specklebelly geese, and snow geese, often all feeding together in the same field. You rarely find an outfitter who will hunt twice daily here because you can shoot all of your allotted birds from one blind in the same field. With low hunting pressure and liberal limits, Alberta is a must-visit destination for any waterfowl enthusiast.
Argentina
I’ll say it outright: Argentina offers the finest duck hunting on the planet! There’s no need to worry about timing the migration since duck numbers remain high throughout the entire season. Consistent shoots combined with world-class service and cuisine make Argentina a must for any passionate waterfowler. Plus, the hunting season from May to August won’t interfere with your traditional fall hunting plans. For anyone wanting to maximize their waterfowl hunting opportunities, Argentina is the place to do it.
Greenland
This is a hunt that is as much about the adventure as it is about the birds themselves. The “holy grail” of waterfowl species, the King Eider, is the prime target here. Hunting these birds in the unique culture and breathtaking landscape of Greenland is an experience like no other. Big water hunting over decoys while chasing one of the most spectacular birds in the world is the ultimate icing on the cake. This is a must-visit duck hunting destination!
These are three amazing destinations that I’m looking forward to sharing with my passionate waterfowler sons. I know these trips will leave lasting impressions and create stories they’ll share with their kids long after I’m gone.
