The 2019 moose season is in full swing and what a season it’s been! We’ve had customers in the field from Alaska to Newfoundland and even in the lower 48, hunting with our top outfitters for all three species of moose … the Alaska-Yukon moose, Canada moose, and Shiras moose. Here are some of our successful hunters who have recently returned having punched their moose tag!
Alaska always comes to mind when you think of moose hunting. After all, the “Last Frontier” is home to some of the highest densities of moose in the world. It is also home to the largest moose specie, the Alaska-Yukon moose. For non-residents, in most areas, a bull must be at least 50” wide or have at least three or four brow points on one side to be legal. WTA works with the top outfitters in the state from western Alaska to the Brooks Range and Alaska Range. These hunts are typically from spike camps (tent camps) to primitive cabins and take place off horseback, from boats, or aircraft-assisted and then on foot. Additional species such as grizzly, black bear and barren ground caribou may also be hunted.
Yukon Territory offers some of the most remote hunting left in North America. 90% of the population resides in the capital city of Whitehorse. The surrounding area is virtually uninhabited and offers some of the best big game hunting found anywhere. The Yukon is also home to the Alaska-Yukon specie of moose. Our Yukon-owned operation, a 3,500 square mile private concession, had an incredible season. This area has been lightly hunted in recent years and is home to a very healthy population of bulls approaching and exceeding 60”! Horseback hunts as well as river hunts are available here. Grizzly and mountain caribou may also be hunted if permits are available.
Northern British Columbia offers your best chance at a really big Canada moose. These are typically horseback hunts, with some boat hunts available, in some of the most pristine country in North America. Here, you’re targeting 50”+ bulls with big paddles. These remote hunts take place from spike camp and remote cabins and also offer an opportunity to hunt a variety of other big game animals such as mountain caribou, black bear, mountain goat, and even Rocky Mountain elk. A great mixed bag hunt!
