Barren Ground Muskox Hunt

Queen Maud Gulf - The Barren Ground Musk ox (SCI classification) is hunted on the mainland of Nunavut across from Victoria Island along the Arctic coast of Queen Maud Gulf, from Umingmaktok in the west, to the Sherman Basin in the east, dominates the top entries in the B&C record book. The first hunts for Barren Ground Musk ox were carried out in March 1986 and since then there has been a 100% hunter success on outstanding musk ox bulls taken by both rifle and bow. These trips consist of 5 full days of hunting. The hunt ends immediately after a musk ox is harvested. All hunts are based on a 2x2 hunter to guide ratio travelling together on snowmobiles for safety measures. There is a possibility of taking an Arctic wolf or wolverine during the hunt for an extra prepaid fee. On most hunts, the tiny village of Umingmaktok with a population of 25 serves as the camp. Hunters stay in a small house in the village or heated plywood cabins that the Inuits use for shelter. In the event that the Musk ox are several hours of travel time away, then the hunters and guides would spike out in tents. However, this is rarely necessary.  Temperature: 10 to -30 F. This hunt is as much about the experience as it is the taking of a muskox!
