Kentucky Hunting Information
Southeast Kentucky has an estimated elk population of over 10,000 animals – the largest elk population of any state east of the Mississippi River. This elk restoration project is obviously considered a massive success. This part of the state, covering over 4 million acres, offers non-residents a limited-entry elk draw. Drawing odds are extremely difficult, but with no point system in place, everyone’s chances are the same.
There are several draws to choose from, including bull firearm, cow firearm, and either-sex archery. For those wanting to hunt bull elk in Kentucky, you might consider having WTA TAGS apply for you for both bull firearm and archery, either sex. Hunters who are 15 years old or younger may apply for the youth-only drawing, which comes with slightly better draw odds. Most of the bull-only and either-sex permits coincide with the rut, making for a fun experience. Bull quality is good. This is a legitimate opportunity to harvest an elk over 300”.
