It's Easy to Get Started:
Utah Hunting Information
When applying for big game tags in the great state of Utah, hunters are typically pursuing some of the highest-quality hunting opportunities in the West, paired with very limited non-resident tag numbers. This combination naturally favors long-term strategy and patience. For hunters willing to apply and build bonus points over time, Utah should be a strong consideration in any application portfolio.
Utah’s limited-entry elk and mule deer tags are widely regarded as world-class. Many hunters are familiar with legendary units such as the Henry Mountains, Paunsaugunt, San Juan, Boulder, and Beaver units, just to name a few. Drawing a tag in one of these areas can truly be life-changing. These units have consistently produced some of the largest elk and mule deer in the West, which is why hunters apply year after year and steadily build bonus points in hopes of eventually drawing one of these coveted permits.
Remember, Utah allocates 50% of its limited-entry tags to maximum bonus-point holders, with the remaining 50% awarded through a random draw. This system ensures that while long-term applicants are rewarded, every applicant still has a chance to draw, making it possible, though unlikely, to pull a premium tag earlier in the process.
Utah offers once-in-a-lifetime permits for several highly sought-after species, including Shiras moose, Rocky Mountain and California bighorn sheep, desert bighorn sheep, mountain goat, and free-range bison. Applicants may apply for any or all of these species. Drawing one of these tags would represent a truly special moment in any hunter’s life. While Utah may not be our top recommendation on these species, it remains another valuable opportunity to pursue these dream tags.
The application strategy in Utah is straightforward. Non-residents must purchase a $120 hunting license ($34 for youth) and then should consider applying for all species of interest (especially elk and mule deer). Building bonus points over time can eventually pay significant dividends, offering the opportunity to hunt some of the most iconic game management units in the West.

Utah Application Information
- Species: WTA TAGS offers application assistance for the following species in Utah: elk, mule deer, antelope, Desert bighorn sheep, Rocky Mountain/California bighorn sheep, Shiras moose, mountain goat and bison.
- Point System: Utah has a bonus point system in place for all of it’s limited-entry species. You will receive one extra bonus point for each year you are unsuccessful in drawing a tag. A bonus point is like an additional raffle ticket in the hat. Therefore, drawing a tag at random is possible – the more bonus points you accrue, the better your chance of drawing. Utah has a preference point system for its general-season deer tags, where applicants with the most points for a particular deer hunt receive the permit.
- Party Applications: Up to four applicants may apply together for Utah’s limited-entry elk, mule deer, and antelope tags (and general-season deer tags). However, party applications are not recommended for units with low non-resident tag allocations. A WTA TAGS Consultant can help you decipher party application possibilities/strategies in Utah. Group applications are not permitted in Utah for their Shiras moose, sheep, mountain goat and bison tags.
- Hunter’s Safety Card Requirement: Hunter education is required for anyone born after December 31, 1965, and must be in your position at the time of application.
- Youth: Applicants are required to be at least 12 years old by December 31st of the year applying.
