Top Spring Turkey Hunting Destinations: WTA’s Recommendations

Travis Baker
|

Winter has settled in here in western Nebraska and we’re already looking forward to longer days, warmer weather, and gobbling turkeys. WTA’s staff is hard at work—show season is underway and our 2024 catalog just hit the streets. We can’t wait to hear from our loyal customers (and new ones) to help you plan your next adventure!

Many of us here at WTA are also starting to put our spring turkey hunting plans together. As many hunters know, now is the time to think about turkey applications and trip planning.

Turkey hunting is, without question, one of the most popular springtime hunts that we arrange for our customers. Hearing that first thunderous gobble after arriving at a ground blind an hour before sunrise makes spring turkey hunting incredibly exciting for hunters of all ages.

It’s an incredible experience and the early season dates make it one of the first hunts of the year for most hunters. Combine that with lots of hunt options, extended regular seasons, the ability to hunt large swathes of private and public land, and the opportunity to pursue multiple species and you have something very special for new hunters and those looking to round out their world slam.

So grab your turkey calls and check out some of the best turkey hunting spots you’ll find this spring season.

Mexico Ocellated Turkey Hunt

Save $500

There is nothing like hunting this unique species in the dense jungle of Mexico, a truly unique hunt area for turkeys. The birds are beautiful, with iridescent shades of aqua, purple, orange, and many other vibrant colors. Each day you head out with the target of a bearded bird, but you truly never know what you may see. Some other species found in this 200,000-acre hunting area include great curassow, crested guan, tinamou, chachalaca, forest cougar, and although rare, red and grey brocket deer. This hunt is truly an adventure into the southern limits of a turkey’s range. Don’t wait on this hunt of a lifetime!

Florida Osceola Turkey Hunt

Save $300

Florida is known for having the toughest turkey of them all, the Osceola gobbler. With a home range limited to the lower third of Florida, Osceolas are one of the most difficult of the North American birds to harvest. The ground cover is thick and birds can be wary. However, hunters travel from all over the country to get a crack at tagging these long-spurred toms. Take advantage of the earliest turkey season in the lower 48 at a place that turns out tons of successful hunts. Check Florida out and get that early-season turkey. You can even tack on a gator hunt or a fishing trip!

Montana Two Bird Merriam’s Turkey Hunt

Southeast Montana should be on every turkey hunters’ radar, especially those looking for a two bearded bird package. It’s hard to bear multiple turkey tags! The private land area we hunt in this region has a high population of turkeys, action-packed hunts are the norm, and it boasts plenty of opportunities for hunters out of prime ground blind locations. Whether you’re looking to complete your slam or simply want an unforgettable turkey adventure, this hunt is perfect for you. Don’t miss out on the chance to experience one of the finest wild turkey hunts available.

Kansas Rio Grande Turkey Hunt

Kansas offers amazing spring turkey hunting. But keep in mind that non-residents now have to apply for a Kansas spring turkey license. Get your spring turkey application in by February 9! This outfitter is located in central Kansas and has a large hunt area of 10,000 acres of private hunting ground. It’s a premier destination that keeps bearded turkeys in front of hunters all season long. This is a one-bird true Rio Grande turkey hunt with a long-term shot opportunity of nearly 100%. Wyoming’s Preference Point Deadline Is Approaching: October 31

Preference Point Deadline: October 31, 2025

The deadline to purchase Wyoming preference points is October 31. If WTA is already managing your TAGS applications, you’re all set. If not, don’t miss the chance to secure points this year. It’s the perfect time to talk with a TAGS consultant to start a new portfolio or grow your existing one.

Wyoming’s system is unique. Unlike other states, you don’t automatically receive a preference point if you’re unsuccessful in the draw. Instead, you must log in after July 1 and purchase your points separately. Building points is critical if you want a shot at drawing a Wyoming tag. Over-the-counter opportunities are a thing of the past. Today, only 25% of non-resident tags are issued randomly. The other 75% go to applicants with the highest point totals.

If you want to hunt big game in Wyoming, building preference points isn’t optional…it’s essential.

While preference points are an investment in the future, don’t let that keep you from starting now. While Wyoming has units that require 18+ points, there are also good opportunities to hunt sooner. There are elk, deer, and antelope hunts that can be drawn with 0–3 points. Think about it this way—the more points you have, the more options you have.

Serious hunters know that Montana is home to some of North America’s most coveted species: Rocky Mountain elk, mule deer, bighorn sheep, Shiras moose, mountain goat, and antelope. The key to unlocking these dream hunts is building points, and the deadline to secure your bonus point for this year is September 30.

Montana squares bonus points in its draw system, and hunters with more points gain a significant advantage in the draw. If you’ve ever dreamed of chasing a record bull, a giant ram, or a heavy-horned buck in Montana, strategically building points will put you in the best position to find success in upcoming seasons.

Montana consistently produces exceptional trophy bulls, making elk the most sought-after species in the state. Archery permits are especially appealing, often requiring only 4–7 years to draw—a remarkably short time period compared to other western states. Rifle permits can often be drawn with a similar point investment, though trophy quality is slightly lower on average. Many of these hunts take place on expansive private ranches, providing hunters with excellent opportunities and high success rates.
