New Mexico APPLICATION DEADLINE FAST APPROACHING – March 20th

As a father there is no hunting partner I would rather have than my kids which is a statement I’m sure aligns with many of the moms, dads and grandparents reading this. We all try to provide exciting and successful trips afield that will fuel a love for the pursuit of game that we ourselves have. Although these great hunts might seem to be harder and harder to find that is simply not the case if you are strategically applying your children into the New Mexico draw for big game licenses.

New Mexico offers youth only tags for eight different species of big game found within the state.  These youth only tags typically offer three to four times better draw odds when compared to adult tags, particularly in the “guided” application pool and often coincide with prime dates to hunt each species. Chasing bugling bulls or rutting bucks, in the state’s best areas, with a rifle or scoped muzzleloader is sure to create a hunting addiction in any child. Applying in New Mexico does have a catch; you must front all of the license fees when applying. This can quickly add up to over $8,000 per child, making it simply unobtainable to apply your children for ALL species of interest.

WTA TAGS values our outdoor heritage and the future of hunting so much so that we offer free application and float services to all youth hunters (18 and under). To be clear, TAGS will apply and front all license fees required at the time of application, the only cost incurred will be the $13 per species state application fee and the one-time $20.00 non-resident youth hunting license. This means your child can apply for all eight species for $124.00. New Mexico allows applicants of any age to apply as long as the applicant has passed a hunters safety course.

The outfitters we work with in New Mexico for the youth only hunts are fathers, uncles, and grandfathers whom excel at providing a safe, family friendly, high quality hunting experience that only furthers a child’s love for the outdoors.

As parents who adore the outdoors we need to remember we’re competing against a fast paced, immediate gratification world for our children’s time. We need to provide engaging, action packed adventures that can rival these modern day distractions. I am positive WTA TAGS can assist you in finding these types of adventures for your kids. Call us at 1-800-755-TAGS(8247)– it could be one of the best call you’ve ever made.

Estate Hunting: A Closer Look at a Misunderstood Hunting Option

Estate Hunting: A Closer Look at a Misunderstood Hunting Option

Estate hunting, often referred to as high fence hunting, is one of the most misunderstood segments of the modern hunting landscape. The term can carry strong assumptions, but those assumptions rarely reflect the reality of what these hunts actually involve.

At its core, estate hunting offers hunters access to large, privately managed properties where wildlife is carefully stewarded, and hunting opportunities are predictable, efficient, and highly successful. These hunts are not intended to replace traditional public-land or limited-entry experiences. They are meant to provide an alternative option for hunters with specific goals, time constraints, or physical considerations.

Understanding estate hunting begins with recognizing how the properties operate and what the experience looks like on the ground.

What Defines an Estate Hunt?

Estate hunts take place on privately owned ranches or preserves enclosed by a perimeter fence. These properties can range from several thousand acres to well over 100,000 acres, depending on location, species, and management model.

Within these boundaries, wildlife populations are actively managed year-round. Landowners and outfitters focus on habitat improvement, water development, herd health, genetics, and balanced harvest rates. The result is a stable wildlife population with a strong age structure and consistent hunting opportunity.

Because animals remain on the property, outfitters can offer hunts with a very high harvest probability. In many cases, hunters can pursue specific age classes, horn characteristics, or species that would otherwise require years of applying or limited-entry permits.

What the Experience Is Actually Like

One of the most common misconceptions about estate hunting is that animals are easily located and harvested quickly in a confined space. In reality, many estate properties are vast, and hunters may never see the perimeter fence during their hunt.

These ranches often feature diverse terrain of rolling hills, timber, brush country, open plains, canyons, and river bottoms, allowing animals to behave naturally. Hunters glass, stalk, track, and pass animals just as they would on large private ranches or expansive Western properties.

Once on the ground, the hunt feels far more like a traditional spot-and-stalk or guided private land experience than what many imagine when they hear the term “high fence.”
